FAILED DENTAL IMPLANTS TREATMENT

TIME TO START YOUR NEW SMILE JOURNEY

SIGNS OF DENTAL IMPLANT FAILURE

Despite the many benefits of dental implants, they do have the potential to fail. But what happens if and when they fail? Can you get them fixed? Will you be able to get another implant?

Dr. Paul Petrungaro and his team at Start Smiling Dental Implant Centers are world renowned for their skills in successfully treating patients that are suffering from ‘botched’ dental implant procedures. Many turn to our team after experiencing complications from advanced bone loss, infections, and many other symptoms resulting from prematurely failing dental Implant procedures performed by previously treating Dentists or Dental Specialists.

So how will you know if you’re experiencing dental implant failure? Though there can be many reasons a dental implant fails, the symptoms are generally the same. The main symptoms and signs of late and early dental implant failure you should look out for are:

  • Severe pain or discomfort

  • A loose or shifting implant

  • Swelling or inflammation of the gums

  • Gum recession around dental implant

  • Difficulty chewing and biting

5%

The rate at which dental implants fail is about 5% — a small number, but when you consider how many people get implants, you realize a lot of people suffer from this. And the rate of failure can be due to many things.

3-4 MONTHS

Early failure of dental implants usually happens within three to four months after the procedure during the process of the implant integrating with the jaw bone. Auto-immune disorders, allergic reactions, infections, and medications are just a few reasons dental implants fail.

1-10 YEARS

If a dental implant fails anywhere from one to 10 years after the procedure, this is considered a late/long-term failure. There are several factors that can contribute to a late dental implant failure including: under-engineered procedures, smoking, lack of gum tissue, and teeth grinding. Infections, lack of bone, and head and neck radiation can also cause your dental implants to fail.

FAILED DENTAL IMPLANTS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW DO I PREVENT DENTAL IMPLANT FAILURE?

The best way to keep your dental implants healthy – and in your mouth – is to practice good oral hygiene. Brush and floss twice daily, and use an alcohol-free antibacterial mouthwash. Some changes to your diet may also be beneficial. Avoid hard candy and other foods that are rough on teeth.

HOW DO YOU TREAT DENTAL IMPLANT FAILURE?

The treatment for failing implants is dependent on the cause of the failure. In cases where a gum infection is causing the implants to fail – called peri-implantitis – the treatment may involve simply cleaning the implant and focusing on better oral hygiene practices in the future. If detected and treated early, peri-implantitis has a very positive prognosis. In cases of damage to or stress on the bone around the implant, a bone graft may be required. Dental implants can only be placed in spots on the jawbone that have sufficient bone density. If jawbone loss or bone damage has caused an implant to fail, the treatment will involve a bone graft.

WHAT IS THE SUCCESS RATE OF DENTAL IMPLANTS?

It varies from individual to individual and with health and habits. For a healthy individual with good oral hygiene and good health, dental implants are predictably successful with reported success rates above 90-95 percent.
